SYMPTOM GUIDES

Joint & Back Pain Symptoms: What They May Mean

Plain-language guides to common joint and back symptoms: what they may mean, warning signs that need urgent care, and which doctor to see first.

Start with your symptom

The same pain can have very different causes, and each may need a different kind of doctor.

Each guide explains mechanical pain (wear-and-tear, strain or injury) versus inflammatory pain (arthritis or autoimmune disease), warning signs, and which specialist to see. The guides cannot diagnose you. You can also try our 7-question arthritis self-check or read about choosing a joint pain specialist.

Symptom guides: common questions

No. These guides explain what symptoms commonly mean and when to seek help, but only a doctor who examines you and reviews your tests can make a diagnosis. Use them to prepare questions for your appointment and to recognise warning signs that need urgent care.
Joint pain should be seen by a rheumatologist when it lasts more than six weeks, involves swelling or several joints, causes morning stiffness over 30 minutes, or comes with rash, fever, tiredness, weight loss or dry eyes and mouth. Early assessment helps prevent joint damage in inflammatory arthritis.
